John Edgar is a bass player from Melbourne. He started out singing bass in a barbershop quartet outside the fish markets of Footscray, but was soon sacked as he wasn't any good. John bought a bass for $140 from a Kensington
butcher's son in 1989, and has since left the fish market scene behind. After an intensive few years of practice and playing regularly at Sunday mass, John began to play around Melbourne in various bands such as jazz funk outfit The Nude Ants and African dance band Soukos Lokale. John discovered Guinness and his Celtic roots with contemporary folk-rock outfit Dalriada.
And amidst the close-knit Melbourne Celtic rock scene, forged a relationship with members of he Ploughboys. John has been with the Ploughboys since 1997, and has since had the opportunity to perform and tour with country singing star Sara Storer, The Davidson Brothers, Paul Hicks, Marcia and Shane Howard, Maria Forde and others too numerous and onerous to mention. John also works closely with community choirs in Melbourne, having recorded and performed with the All Saints Sudanese Choir in Footscray and The Multi-Cultural Womens Choir of Preston featuring voices from Iran, Macedonia, China and Somalia. John believes in the unifying power of music and will be going down to the Footscray fish markets this afternoon, with a bass and an amp, to unify the punters who gave him a start...
